The Student Government Association at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will hold a candlelight vigil to honor victims of the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The vigil will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, in the UL Lafayette Student Union courtyard. The public is invited.

On Feb. 14, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killed 17 people when he opened fire at the school in southern Florida.

β€œIn addition to honoring victims of the shooting, we want to acknowledge that students, teachers and staff members at schools – including at colleges and universities – deserve to feel safe and they should feel safe,” said Margarita Perez, dean of students at UL Lafayette.

A limited number of candles will be available. Attendees are urged to bring candles or download virtual candles on smart phones.
